MMS Pop Quiz #2:
You happen to be lost in the woods wearing
your Rolex watch. You could a) use it bribe a bear to show you the way
out; or b) use it to follow Glen Creuziger’s instructions below:

From an article in Backpacker Magazine,
June 2003, p. 115 If you forgot your
compass at home and are wearing an analog wristwatch have no fear.
The analog watch can be used as a compass with the aid of the sun.
Point the hour hand of the watch toward the sun. Move along the
perimeter of the watch half way between 12:00 and the current hour.
Draw an imaginary line out at this point and this is south! (See
diagram at left.) This method works in the Northern hemisphere.
If you have a digital watch remember your compass or bring one of
those weight bearing GPS units.

| Editor’s Note:
With reservations, we’ll say b) follow Glen Creuziger’s
instructions. But we really prefer that you don’t get lost in
the woods in the first place, so we can’t endorse this method
outright. Just try it for yourself. Also be advised, the method is
not useful at night. |
