Russula Study Planned

The Paul Bunyan Group met on June 22nd to discuss plans for the summer forays. During the winter meetings the group has already decided to study the genus Russula. This decision was based on their desire to learn about some of the less known edible fungi such as those occurring in the genus Russula, as well as on a need to collect fungi with a purpose.

During the summer and fall forays many of the collected mushrooms remain unidentified and are thrown away along with the identified ones.  Russulas are often abundant in the group’s foray sites, especially in the conifer woods, and after a "normal" collecting trip most remains among the unidentified. One year one of the good edibles, R. barlae, a member of the xerampelina group, was fruiting abundantly at the foray site, and at the suggestion of one of the members a few in the group tried this species and found it to be rivaling with the chanterelle in flavor.

The proposed study will not be merely a search for edibles. The collections will be done systematically: only a small manageable number of specimens will be collected, documented and dried for later studies.
